Double Virtuosity
Sometimes, life can take an unexpected turn. Seong-Jin Cho’s life certainly did after he once played both piano and violin in a competition. On the violin, he won third prize. As a pianist, he didn’t win anything. Luckily, he decided he preferred the piano anyway. Had he taken a different decision, the world of classical music would have lost a great pianist. What is more, this evening’s recital by two world-class performers would never have happened. For the first time in their extraordinary careers, Augustin Hadelich and Seong-Jin Cho are getting together on stage to play some chamber music. What makes this such a special event is that these two musicians are kindred spirits who both worked their way to the top with a modesty and sincerity that is rarely seen today. Neither of them has any interest in pretentions or affectations. What they do have, however, is a uniquely intense approach to their music. We are very much looking forward to listening to the profoundly poetic playing of these two discerning performers.
