Chicago Symphony Orchestra

Mahler and Mäkelä are an absolute dream team. This season at the Elbphilharmonie, we have the chance to hear them twice. As the newly appointed Music Director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Mäkelä will demonstrate just how brilliant he is at the podium in a performance of Mahler’s poignant Ninth Symphony. It has a massive score that demands great presence of mind from its conductor, making it just perfect for Mäkelä to impress his audience. What’s more, it is no coincidence that this leading American orchestra is performing in Hamburg in the very week of the Elbphilharmonie’s 10th anniversary: for it was here, in January 2017, that the Chicago Symphony Orchestra gave its first guest performance during the opening week of Hamburg’s brand-new concert hall!
