España, Mi Amor!
Prepare for an evening of music bursting with vitality and temperament as Stravinsky draws on the entire range of symphonic sound to portray his story of the firebird in glorious technicolour and Édouard Lalo paints a powerful picture depicting his longing for Spain in his Symphonie Espagnole. When in 1875, Lalo gave his latest work its title, it was a huge understatement. This is not merely an orchestral work but also a veritable showpiece for solo violin. It is well worth noting that Lalo dedicated it to Pablo de Sarasate, who was one of the best violinists of his time. In honour of his beloved Spain, Lalo produced a dazzling display of dynamic orchestral colour, burning with fiery folklore and technically tremendously challenging. For Spanish violinist María Dueñas, it is a composition close to her heart. She played it when she won the 2021 Menuhin Competition, which sparked her meteoric rise to fame.
