Earthly Deeds, Heavenly Music
Easter would not be Easter at St. Michael’s church without a performance of a major Passion. For the Good Friday concert in 2027, musical director Jörg Endebrock has selected the magnificent and dramatic St John Passion. It tells an enduring tale of cruelty, compassion, suffering and hope, set to music for eternity by Johann Sebastian Bach. The great composer‘s unique blend of narrative, drama, heart-stopping chorales and meditative arias goes straight to the heart and is a deeply moving experience. The original performance of this sacred work also took place on a Good Friday. It was on 7th April 1724 in St Nicholas Church in Leipzig, where Bach himself was installed as musical director of St Thomas Church. It was the start of a long tradition of performing major Passion works in Holy Week that has continued until the present day.
