Sunshine and Stars
Camille Saint-Saëns’ magnificent Third Violin Concerto has it all. So does star violinist Julia Fischer, who is performing this delicately dreamlike, bewitchingly beautiful and virtuoso piece of music as part of our series of ProArte concerts. Originally performed by Pablo de Sarasate, a leading violinist of his time to whom Saint-Saëns dedicated his composition in 1880, the concerto draws its listeners into a world of enchanting melodies and subtly impressionistic tonal shades. The listeners at the Elbphilharmonie are in good hands. Julia Fischer is unquestionably a brilliant master of her trade. To open the concert, Saint-Saëns’ soloistic highlight is perfectly complemented by the Orchestre National de France playing Hector Berlioz’s invigorating overture to his opera Béatrice et Bénédict. This sensational evening ends with Antonín Dvořáks inspirational Eighth Symphony.
